William "Bill" Kent

MORRISONVILLE - William Kinsey "Bill" Kent, 85, of Morrisonville passed away Monday, July 27, 2009, at 1:40 p.m. at Taylorville Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 1, 1923, in Taylorville, the son of William Harold "Pappy" and Vesta Elizabeth (Fickle) Kent. He married Lillian Irene Eyman on Nov. 30, 1947, at the First Presbyterian Church in Morrisonville. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Benjamin H. Kent; and a grandson, Kinsey C. Muffick.

Bill was a rural mail carrier in the Morrisonville area for 41 years, retiring in 1989, and also farmed most of his life.

He was former president of W.H. Kent, Inc. Trucking. His memberships included the Morrisonville United Methodist Church, lifetime member of the Leslie Reddick American Legion Post 721 and Morrisonville Masonic Lodge 681. Bill was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a Sergeant Tank Commander during WWII from 1942-45. He served in Africa, Italy, France, Germany and Austria with the 756th Tank Battalion, receiving a Bronze Star, Silver Star and Purple Heart as well as other awards. Bill was a fan of the Cardinals and the Fighting Illini.

Surviving are his wife, L. Irene Kent of Morrisonville, IL; son, Daniel W. (wife, Louise Brown) Kent of Chatham, IL; daughters, Deborah K. Kent (husband, Robert J. Rolf) of Shreveport, LA, Susan I. Creek of Taylorville, IL, and Samantha A. Cartagena of Springfield, IL; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary E. Heineman of Elkins, WV.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 30 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Morrisonville United Methodist Church. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Ken Dees officiating. Inurnment will follow at Morrisonville Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 721.

The family suggests memorials to be made to the Morrisonville United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
